Are IQ Tests Accurate?

Over time, psychologists have refined the Binet-Simon test to innovate the cognitive and skill-based aspects of intelligence testing. These tests are higher on the accuracy scale and their validity is often determined using statistical techniques.

However, please note that cognitive IQ tests examine an individual’s conventional intelligence, these do not encompass all dimensions of human intellect.

Typically, the reliability of Intelligence Quotient tests is calculated on the scale of reliability coefficient, designed to determine the consistency of scores.

Correlation coefficients range from -1 to 1 and are usually positive values. Ideally, it should be higher than 0.8s and the higher the coefficient value, the greater the IQ test reliability is.

How is IQ Measured?

IQ tests or Intelligence Quotient testing is measured using standardized testing, which allocates a score to an individual representing his/ her intellectual abilities relative to the average public.

The questions usually test a person’s reasoning and problem-solving skills through short and long-term memory questions, puzzles, pattern recognition, and time management.

The common scoring method of intelligence testing is Deviation IQ, with an average score of 100, which may differ by country.

The average IQ score is 100 and about 68% of the public score falls in the average cognition. Please note that IQ test scores measure relative intellect to the general public.

What is an IQ Test?

In 1904, Alfred Binet, a French psychologist introduced the first Intelligence Quotient or IQ test to differentiate students with learning difficulties or disabilities.

  • The Bell Curve is the general graph of IQ scores. The peak of the ball is where the majority of the score lies, and it follows a down slip to each side, one representing below-average scores, while the other with above-average scores.
  • Mean refers to the average score. It is calculated by adding all the scores and dividing them by the total number of scores.
  • Standard Deviation measures the variability in public. A low standard deviation means most data points have close values, whereas a high deviation indicates the data points are spread out. IQ tests usually have a + and – 15 standard deviation.
